Screen Time was launched in 2025 as an exchange program between HEK (House of Electronic Arts) in Basel and SONGEUN, a non-profit foundation in Seoul, to establish a platform for the presentation and exchange of video works from Switzerland and Korea.
Following the inaugural screening at SONGEUN in October 2025, which featured a selection of works from HEK's collection alongside videos by recipients of the Pax Art Awards, the second edition will be presented at HEK in October 2026. This year's program brings together works by six Korean video artists selected through an open call organized by SONGEUN.
Framed by the broader theme of technology and society, the featured works examine how technological discourse is experienced, negotiated, and re-imagined within the context of contemporary Korean society. Addressing the use, mediation, and transformation of technology in an increasingly complex digital environment, the artists also foreground the social, political, and cultural questions that emerge alongside technological change.
The exhibition title, Signals in Translation, reflects these shared concerns by considering images, sounds, gestures, data, and memory as forms of "signal" that carry meaning across technological systems, languages, and cultural contexts. In the process of transmission, these signals are subject to distortion, slippage, and reinterpretation, opening up new possibilities for communication and understanding.
