Each Multiple has 16 luminous chambers, which can be individually controlled. Although – and precisely because – the number of pixels is greatly reduced, it is possible, when they are set in motion, to trigger a variety of image worlds and incredibly complex processes. Cellular automata are infiltrated by chaotic systems; random structures unexpectedly develop a symmetrical function. The light image generation and its operation are not fixed or repeatable but rather are always generated anew by a specially developed software in keeping with certain aesthetic rules. Basically, this yields two structures: order and chaos; or in terms of image-forming processes: ornament and aleatory, or uncertainty. Ornament here represents an intentionally designed pattern as well as the creation of art whose regularity, punctuated by small irregularities, draws the eye. Aleatory represents the process of using random principles to remove intention from the establishment of a pattern, but it also poses a similar question: Which structures can interrupt a regularity of "irregularities," remove predictability?
