Mélodie Mousset
We were looking for ourselves in each other

Mélodie Mousset uses her own body as the starting point for her work, in which high-resolution imaging methods of medical diagnostics play an important role. Mousset has used them to create virtual animations of her own bodily organs, which float down to the user in a paradisiacal island setting, complete with blue sky and sounds of the sea.

As the luminous, monochromatic organs descend, they expand into larger-than-life, accessible structures, while the sounds of a light sea breeze intensify dramatically. Through the reversal of scale, the human being becomes a small blood corpuscle that flows through the organs and can thus also peer into the complex, convoluted inner structure of the externally smooth and apparently self-contained forms.

On one hand, Mousset uses the medico-pathological approach in a humorous way to counter the notion contained in the title of her work, that one can ??achieve self-knowledge through finding one’s spiritual reflection in the other. The separation of the individual organs and their aestheticization and dramatization as accessible, oversized sculptures, shows the increasing change in our perception of the body, thanks to technological advances, from animated subject to removed, dissectible and optimizable object.
